End of the Eunuch Archive

I have recently heard that the Eunuch Archive is closing its site at the end of the year (2024); they have been unable to raise funds and find supporters. I cannot begin to imagine why that should be.

I’ve had my beef with them – being banned for no good reason when I was in crisis and finding friendship and support amongst some of it’s members.

I was not the only person summarily ejected.

What I’ve learnt is that there were many good people who volunteered to moderate and support the Archive, however true power seemed to rest in the hands of a few fanatics who became trigger happy. The good ones were bullied by the bad eggs.

Now the archive is closing on the 1st January. One of its moderators is attempting to rescue it and move it to a different hosting provider. Maybe some new leadership, if its non-judgemental and inclusive, can keep the immense wealth of experience available to the wider eunuch and nullo community.

I hope the new leaders will learn the lessons from the old – it sounds like they have and will attempt to keep the site clear of the kind of scandal that undermines both the old EA and contaminated the latest Standards of Trans Care WPATH 8.

When I know more, I will post it on my blog and in the wiki.

It’s a sad fact but I have found that the human ego eventually ruins most groups/organisations, even those with the best intentions. I’ve seen it happen way too often. I do hope the group finds a safe new home.

Thank you, every democracy’s Achilles heel is the strong personality, and I guess the EA was no exception

And the format didn’t hold, so now it’s confusing… great.

I’ve just got in and will take a look around. I hope my old friends are still there – I want to thank them for their help.

      How are you keeping?

I’m holding up all right, I think! Thank you. I’d made a reply last night on here, to explain some things, but it didn’t seem to work correctly. If you like, I’ll email you the Libre Office file and you can sort it out! I don’t see it on here now. Then again, it was a battle getting logged in.

Yes, the EA is closing down on January 1, 2025.

In a nutshell, the VBulletin system is so broken that it can’t be fixed. Dealing with that software is like arguing with a petulant child, I think. That’s the main reason – it’s so broken that upgrading to fix it seems to result in loss of even more of the forums and posts, and results in a restoration having to be run – right back to square one. So many parts of it have failed that it’s a wonder that there’s still a forum left.

Then again, it’s like being able to drive a car, when most drivers are not capable of installing a new engine! And then when someone puts the new one in, it won’t start.

The Kinsey Institute plans to take a copy of the entire database and archive it for public viewing, but we’re unsure if their computer geniuses will be able to save the existing forum as “read only”.

If you like, I can try posting my response tomorrow again in a separate reply, and make sure it posts correctly.

        Thanks.

        Paolo

        Hi Paolo,

It’s great to hear from you!

I’m not happy that the data in the EA is being given away! Although the Kinsey Institute isn’t such a bad place for it to go. That’s a gross violation of data protection rights; I presume any data handover would be anonymised?

They’re not getting real names, etc., and if they can display the forums, none of the features are going to work, such a reply, PM, or email. For example, showing a post by me isn’t going to give you my email, IP#, none of that. The system does keep a record of the IP’s you log in from, but Talula assures me that that data will not be shared.

For those interested in the Fiction Archive, the amazing FHunter has written a script that will download the FA for you to your own computer, which will literally give you a mostly functional FA without the need for the actual server. I’ll share that link if you like. Please let me know.

Yes please Paolo, but via email id you’re able to.

That is reassuring regarding the data protection

OK. Send me an email that’s not from a reply here. I don’t seem to have your email address. Honestly, this site is making me crazy trying to log in and stay logged in.

would there be a public copy of the fiction archive anywhere, for those of us who may not have been on since before this news hit? (like its the first i heard, would have used the script otherwise… the mentioned issues were offputting)

its a significant chunk of unique literature and expression after all, including from authors who may no longer be alive or have no other hosting of their own, but as its mostly text i doubt it should take up more than a couple hundred MB maybe… random image hosting sites (or somewhere like pastebin or catbox) wouldnt even blink at that much data. Could even just make it a single zip or rar file that would be significantly smaller. Stash it in the hidden part of a jpg like used for sharing ebooks on 4chan, etc.

maybe even go back to posting things on usenet in extremis.

on top of that, where would any new ones get posted, and forumites continue to connect?

Use the contact form to email me and I’ll find the link. I don’t want this blog linked to the fiction archive because many of the stories have complicated viewpoints and controversial subjects
