Healing Timeline

The procedure is always done as an outpatient operation and is minimally invasive.

Most likely, you will be able to return home very shortly after the operation.

Generally, there should be very little swelling and minimal need for painkillers (although some may be required); however exact recovery time will differ between patients.

For a simple orchidectomy, the surgeon may choose a single mid-line incision between the testes, or an incision in each testicle. Radical orchidectomies (where the surgeon removes the testicles through an incision in the abdomen) is usually performed on those with testicular cancer to remove as much of the spermatic cords as possible.

The stitches are most likely to be dissolvable (self-absorbing), they may be standard stitches, in which case they will be removed about a week after surgery.

Additional Notes on Recovery

The scar(s) will be very small and most likely will disappear or might even disappear over time.

Is important to note that recovery time will differ between individuals.

It may be possible to feel the spermatic cords for a while after surgery (one contributor mentioned that they were still able to feel the cords after three months, however, three years on they no longer could).
