Big Boys: Awkward, Tender, Hilarious

Originally a Channel 4 series, we found this on Netflix.

It charts the first year of a twenty year old called Jack (therefore mature student) and his friends. It flicks back and forth to the year his father died. Jack is a wet lettuce, sweet but utterly inexperienced. He is also a closeted gay.

He is billeted with a twenty-five year old called Dan (played by Jon Pointing), whom Jack always calls “you”. Dan is a hunk and a jock and initially seems to be a complete airhead, yet as the show unfolds, is revealed as a wonderfully sensitive fellow dealing with his Nan’s dementia and a difficult childhood. He is taking antidepressants, which have a tragic side-effect for the young hunk.

This show tackles a number of serious issues through situational comedy: grief, impotence, self-esteem, coming out, and the ordinary love between friends in a group.

I love all the characters. They chose very well their journalism lecturer: he is possibly the sexiest man on television!

The coming out episode is both awkward and tender; the reaction of his mum and family was wonderful. Heart-warming without being nauseating.

This is the first in three seasons. Only Season One is on Netflix, but I’ll be donning my gayest detective hat to track down the rest!
