The butterfly effect

Long ago, I learnt that one should never do something for the first time during a running event!

For example, if you’ve never run after eating Indian the night before during a practice run: don’t eat Indian the night before a race!

If you’ve not worn the shoes before the race, don’t let the official run be their maiden voyage!

If you haven’t trained while eating jelly babies, do not be tempted by the kind spectators offering them on the day: you may very well be sick!

So today I went for a little 5k trial run wearing my half marathon butterfly costume! The only thing I left out were the deely-boppers!

I expected the butterfly wings to create a drag and make the run harder; they were actually fine. Being two parts, rather than a cape, the breeze could pass around me and through the middle.

The hat wasn’t a problem.

The running onesie was actually quite cool and comfortable. The zipper at the front really helped to keep my torso cool. However, the legs are shorter than my usual running shorts and I could feel my thighs rubbing against each other. I don’t know whether that is going to be a problem nor what I should do about it if it is! Put up with it, I guess.

I did get noticed as I ran along the high street. I didn’t feel as much of a plonker as I thought I might!

It was nice when kids said: “look! He’s dressed like a butterfly!” I suppose that is the point of dressing up!

I’m happy and feel as ready for my run on the 11th May as I can be!
