Coffee

Funiculosus calls me “puppy” because I enjoy puppy play – but he’s also noticed that I behave a little like a puppy in real life as well! That includes having a sensitive nose and getting stimulated and excited (some be sometimes repulsed) by smell.

So I was at the municipal recycling centre dropping off bags of prunings from trees and bushes in the garden, and above the stench of rotting vegetation wafted the aroma of roasting coffee.

Mmmmnm!

I had smelt it before from time to time but had never worked out where it was coming from, and Mrs Google wasn’t able to help.

As I left the recycling centre I peered down a side road and there I saw the word “coffee” in big orange letters.

I had found the steaming kettle!

Parking up, I couldn’t see anything like a reception, but there was a fellow packing boxes in the warehouse.

I asked if they sold coffee. Perhaps a dumb question, but this looked more like a distribution centre rather than a store.

He showed me to some stairs and told me to ask at reception.

There wasn’t so much a reception as a scattering of desks with brightly coloured in-trays (how old-skool!) and groovy looking office workers wearing headphones. I didn’t know what to do, so I stood there like a lemon for a couple of minutes before somebody removed their headphones and asked if they could help.

A simple question “can I buy coffee here?”

The answer was “yes, let me go get somebody”. I was worried that they thought I wanted to buy a crate full – I only wanted two bags!

Another munchkin came to take the order. Clearly this wasn’t a shop as they really weren’t set up for in-person sales – she had to send me a link to pay, and it was a small faff to remove the delivery charge.

I was amused to see that there was an option to track my order. I wondered if it would have this little icon traipsing around the warehouse like a character from a runny-jumpy-collecty-thingy computer game.

While I waited for the order to be processed, she told me about coffee and the ways and reasons that decaffe can look and taste different from the full-fat version of the bean. This company uses a water method to remove the caffeine, whereas many coffee roasters use chemicals, which can alter the taste and leave residues.

Yuk!

She also made me a latte with their signature beans. I could have had a single shot, and from the size of the cup the double I had was going to be too strong. It was, but I could tell that it was a good coffee.

She talked about oat milk and the different kinds, since I’d commented that oat milk in coffee can feel too heavy.

Eventually she led me downstairs where another munchkin was packing a box with my coffee bag.

When I run out of my usual coffee I think I’ll be buying from this place – it was nice to go in and support something of a local business.

Funny what a puppy persona can find when they follow their nose.
