Here I am in Toledo, I’m showered and fed (paella followed by churros and watered with sangria), just wandering and getting a feel for the city of the Spanish Inquisition.
I noticed a few Pride flags hanging from buildings. I’d noticed them in Barcelona (which you might expect in that city). I’d even seen a large one hanging in the medieval square in Sigüenza.
Whilst I had expected to find references to the infamous Spanish Inquisition, I hadn’t expected to walk into Toledo’s Pride festival!
Nobody expects the Toledo Pride! Their main weapons are glitter, flags, and a fanatical devotion to style.
There are speakers, talking way too fast for me and my beginner’s Spanish to follow, but boy are they enthusiastic!
If I had any doubt about this city, I don’t now. Seeing flags on public buildings makes me feel welcome and safe. As a tourist and a visitor, I hope that’s of some value to the city.
I can’t help thinking about British towns that have withdrawn official support for Pride. Whatever the intention, it sends a message to people like me – residents and visitors alike – that our presence is less welcome than it used to be.
That’s cruel, and shortsighted.
Thank you, O city of the Inquisition for making me feel welcome!
