One of the software developers on my team is leaving today, creating a big hole that I need to plug as soon as possible.

I have interviewed two chaps today, but I am a bit out of practice with interviewing, so I let my colleagues lead on the first one.

He was good and we’ve lined him up for the technical test and a follow-up interview.

The second chap was less experienced and I quickly felt that he wasn’t right for us, even though he was a nice fellow.

Towards the end of the interview I said “If you have any more interviews lined up, I hope they go well”.

I could have died.

I was trying to be encouraging to this nervous chap who was having his first interview since re-entering the job pool and he had the misfortune to have it with me!

Sometimes I enjoy not having a filter … at other times less so!
