Office emails and mortality

An email went out from HR saying that if anyone needed emotional support after the managing director’s recent message, help was available.

That struck me as a bit much. The last management email I’d noticed was about a senior restructure – not exactly pulse-raising. I had near-zero interest in the email and I couldn’t understand why anybody else would either.

Then I saw it.

Shortly before the HR message, the managing director had emailed to say that a colleague – not someone I knew – had died the night before of a heart attack.

I felt sick.

Only a few months ago, I had one too.

Awful news for his family and friends, obviously – but it also brought home just how close I’d come. How thin the margin actually was.

After my heart attack, a few colleagues said it had made them think more seriously about their own health.

A kind of “If Mr Fit can have one, then Mr Blobby is definitely at risk.” ripple effect.

I’m just leaving these thoughts here.

Take care of yourselves – and each other.
