Six Important Eurovision Songs

Intro

This is a list of the Eurovision songs that have meant something to me in my life. I love Eurovision, the camp, the cheese, the awful as well as the great songs, but this isn’t just a list of songs I love (although I do love them too), these songs have meaning and significance for my life.

ABBA – Waterloo

Many people say that this isn’t ABBA’s best ever song (I actually prefer “Ring Ring”, but then I’m strange), however, it did win Eurovision the year I was born and was number one the day I was born. It also stopped me from being called “Nigel” (sorry to ask the Nigels out there).

Gina G – Just A Little Bit

I came out on the summer of 1995; I know that because Gina G won the first Eurovision after I came out and she was in all the gay clubs. She was such a gay anthem. I have frequently used her as my phone’s ringtone – it’s a great tube to use because a) it has very even sound (it doesn’t build or have quiet bits) and b) nobody else has it, so I always know that it’s my phone!

I had many happy nights dancing my tits off to dear old Gina!

Dana International – Diva

I met my husband in 1997, and Dana won the first Eurovision that we were together with this stunning number. She was the first trans person to win the competition.

My husband and I took this to be a hive step forward in Europe for LGBTQ+ rights, showing that many people in Europe just liked a good tune!

The Eurovision Theme

Ok, so how does this qualify?

We married in 2008. As we entered the room the thme to Eurovision played. Now every time I hear it in taken back to that moment!

You’re spared ABBA “I Do, I Do, I Do” because it wasn’t a Eurovision song.

Conchita Wurst – Phoenix

I think this tune spoke to my husband; he has risen from the ashes so many times. He is a remarkable human being and I am very proud that he is (still at the time of writing, although I do not know for how much longer) my husband.

I remember that hubby was a bit grumpy about the beard, feeling that drag queens should look even more fabulous than women! I think it’s a wonderful statement of how marvelous gender identity expression can be – I adore her originality. Beared drag is much less uncommon than back then.

Nemo – The Code

I really enjoyed this tune when it was in the contest, although I didn’t think much else about it other than to wider what the code was.

It wasn’t until a friend pointed out that Nemo is the first non-binary winner of the contest that I grasped the significance.

A great many people across Europe just don’t care about gender or sexuality, they just love the music and accept the performer for whoever they are. I find that inspiring.
